HOMILY APRIL 27, 2022

  • REV FR FORTUNATO ROMEO CRS
Date preached April 27, 2022

The first reading of the Acts of the Apostles tells of the Sadducees’ attempt to silence the apostles. The Sadducees were aristocratic families from which the most important priests were recruited. They were also a political group. They did not believe in the resurrection of the dead and put the apostles in prison just for preaching the resurrection of Jesus. The first time they were released but continued to preach despite the prohibition. Then the high priest decided to put them back in prison, without taking into account the liberating Christ who frees his friends.

The theme of the Resurrection of Christ is always present. Whoever has risen with him also experiences the resurrection in his everyday life. Resurrection is also freedom.

The real protagonist of this text is the Word of God. The Word is free, it cannot be chained. Nothing and no one can prevent this word from spreading. And we, the disciple of Jesus, are the servants of this Word. We too are called to announce the good news to the whole world. Perhaps we too will suffer persecution, perhaps we will be mocked and judged, but the Word remains. With its strength and at the same time its meekness, it opposes any repressive system that wants to silence it.

Today’s Gospel continues the long nocturnal discourse between Jesus and the Pharisee Nicodemus. The important themes of this speech are:

  1. God loved and loves the world. What is the “world”? It is all humanity. God loves humanity and shows that by giving him his only Begotten Son. Whoever accepts that God has come down to us in Jesus, he has already passed through death and has eternal life.
  2. The judgment. Sometimes we are afraid of judgment. But God’s image is that of a father full of tenderness and not of a severe judge. Whoever believes in Jesus is not judged, because he is already accepted by God. And whoever does not believe in Jesus has already been judged. He excluded himself. Unfortunately, many people do not want to accept Jesus, because the light of him reveals the evil that exists in them. I hope none of us are in this category of people
  1. Practice the truth. In every human being, there is a divine seed, a trait of the Creator. Jesus, revelation of the Father, is a response to the deep desire for the truth of the human being. Whoever wants to be faithful to what is most profound in himself, accepts Jesus.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us ask our God for wisdom, the wisdom that allows us to bless him at all times for his goodness, the wisdom that allows us to be sure of his closeness, the wisdom that allows us to seek for truth and practice it in our life through bright deeds.
