Saint Jerome Emiliani
Father of Orphans • Patron of Needy Youth
Our Founder
Saint Jerome Emiliani (1486–1537), founder of the Clerics Regular of Somasca, stands as a powerful witness of conversion, charity, and total trust in Divine Providence.
Born into a noble Venetian family, Jerome pursued a military career before God transformed his heart through suffering, prayer, and a miraculous liberation that led him to dedicate his life entirely to Christ in the poor.
From Soldier to Servant
Captured during war and imprisoned in chains, Jerome entrusted himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through her intercession, he was freed — a moment that marked his radical conversion and new path of life.
Father of Orphans
Leaving wealth and status behind, he embraced the poorest of the poor, especially orphans, founding homes, schools, and communities where dignity, faith, and love were restored.
Founder of the Somascan Fathers
At Somasca, Jerome gathered companions dedicated to the service of the poor. This became the Order of the Somascan Fathers, whose mission continues today across the world.
